Chinese “Dragon Chairs”
Thursday, August 10th, 2006

Chairs of this type originate in China and South East Asia. Such chairs generally date from around 1900 onward,Remain in production to this day. The originals were “Made for Export” pieces brought back to the West by businessmen and tourists during the first quarter of the 20th Century to the West. These are most often referred to
as ” Dragon Chairs” because they are sometimes carved with dragons and other mythical creatures. Most are constructed of Padouk, a hardwood that resembles mahogany or teak, and finished in a almost black stain. These were also made in softwoods if the intention was to use a colored finish or in ” Cinnabar Red” lacquer.
