Bennington Lion

Friday, August 11th, 2006

This lion is a mid 19th Century piece, decorated in what’s referred to as “Flint Enamel”, a glaze now often called “Bennington”, after the place where it was first made, Bennington, Vermont. The most famous company that produced figurines of this type was that of the Fenton Lyman Company, which patented the flint-enamel process in 1849. Bennington pottery has always been highly desirable with collectors, beginning in the 1930s and 1940s, but even more valuable in the current market.
